What happens after the insemination?
At Colyton Vet we recommend a pregnancy ultrasound at 4 weeks post insemination. At this point we can confirm if your dog is pregnant or not. Often, we are asked how many puppies are visible however, ultrasound is not an accurate method to count the number of puppies.
We also recommend a pregnancy radiograph at 8 weeks. This will allow you to more accurately determine the number of puppies. This is especially important for natural births so you can count the number of puppies that pass out.
What if I don’t know when my dogs mated?
In scenarios where unexpected matings have occurred or the date is not known our vets can give you an estimated gestational age based on the pups measurements. Keep in mind that this is only a rough estimate.
